Hawaii icons
Hawaii-themed icon set of twenty.
Featured in the August 2014 issue of The Noun Gazette.
I was inspired to create an icon set after taking a Skillshare class by Edward Boatman. I decided to create a set based on Hawaii, where my most of my family is from.

Ideation
I typically start with a word association list when I’m starting a design project. I jot down anything that comes to mind, no matter how random it seems.
When I move on to create thumbnail sketches, they don’t need to be too detailed. The deets get fleshed out in Illustrator in the rendering phase.
Exploration
Geometric shapes are the foundation of how I construct icons. Utilizing basic shapes as a grid act like a guide to understand proportion and scale. I keep the seame line weight as wel in order to maintain consistent visual language.
The Loco Moco! The Loco Moco is a local dish that includes an easy over egg, rice, beef patty, and gravy. Lots of gravy. It isn’t the healthiest dish in the world, but it is delicious. The Loco Moco is a challenging thing to photograph and vectorize. I explored a couple versions and selected version #3 because it was simple and matched the style of the set.
